Quality caps at your plan tier. If your source file is lower quality, you get the source quality — we don't upscale. Compare Master & Gold plans →
How It Works
Seedr converts videos to HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) — same tech as Netflix and YouTube. Video streams in your browser without downloading the full file first.
- Instant start: Click play, video starts in seconds
- Adaptive bitrate: Quality adjusts to your connection speed
- Seek anywhere: Jump to any point without buffering the whole file
- Resume (v2): Pick up where you left off, even on different device
You can stream a 50GB 4K file without downloading it — you only fetch the segments you actually watch.
Chromecast
Cast from Seedr to your TV:
- Start playing video in Seedr
- Tap cast icon
- Select your Chromecast
- Video moves to TV
Your phone/laptop becomes the remote — play, pause, seek, adjust volume, change quality.
Supported Devices
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K): Full 2160p support
- Chromecast Ultra: Full 2160p support
- Chromecast (3rd gen): Up to 1080p
- Android TV / Google TV: Built-in cast, quality depends on device
- Smart TVs with Chromecast built-in: Varies by TV model
If your Chromecast doesn't support 4K, you'll get the highest quality it can handle.
Media Server Integration
Connect Seedr to your existing media server:
- Plex: Mount via WebDAV, Plex scans and serves to all your devices
- Jellyfin: Same WebDAV integration, open-source
- Kodi: Official Seedr addon
- Roku: Dedicated Seedr channel
Why Use a Media Server?
Media servers like Plex add features Seedr's built-in player doesn't have: automatic metadata fetching, poster art, watched status across family members, and apps for every platform. Seedr provides the storage and bandwidth; Plex provides the interface.
Format Support
Containers
MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV, WebM, FLV, WMV, M4V, MPEG, 3GP. MKV with embedded subtitles works.
Video Codecs
H.264, H.265 (HEVC), VP8, VP9, AV1, MPEG-4, MPEG-2. Common codecs play natively; rare ones get transcoded.
Audio
AAC, MP3, AC3, DTS (converted), FLAC, Opus. Multi-channel preserved where possible.
Subtitles
SRT, VTT, and embedded MKV subs. Timing adjustment if they're out of sync.
What About Unsupported Formats?
If a file uses a codec your browser can't play natively, Seedr transcodes it automatically. This adds a few seconds of processing time on first play. Once transcoded, subsequent plays are instant. Full format details →
Player Features
- Quality selector (auto or manual)
- Playback speed: 0.5x to 2x
- Picture-in-Picture (v2)
- Theater mode
- Fullscreen with auto landscape on mobile
- Keyboard shortcuts (Space, arrows, M, F)
- Multi-audio track switching (v2)
Keyboard Shortcuts
| Space | Play/Pause |
| ← / → | Seek 10 seconds |
| ↑ / ↓ | Volume up/down |
| M | Mute/Unmute |
| F | Fullscreen |
| C | Subtitles on/off |
Offline Viewing (v2)
Cache videos for offline playback:
- Choose quality (360p saves space, 4K for full quality)
- Start watching while it downloads
- Pin videos to prevent auto-cleanup
You can cache content before a flight and watch it offline.
How Much Storage Does Caching Use?
| Quality | ~1 Hour Video |
|---|---|
| 360p | ~300 MB |
| 720p | ~1.5 GB |
| 1080p | ~3 GB |
| 4K | ~10-15 GB |
Sizes vary based on content complexity. Action scenes compress less efficiently than static scenes.
Common Questions
What speed do I need for 4K?
25+ Mbps recommended. The player auto-adjusts if your connection is slower — you'll get the best quality your bandwidth supports.
Does HDR work?
HDR passthrough depends on browser and device. Best results: Chrome on Windows/Mac, casting to HDR display.
Can I stream on free plan?
Yes, at 360p. Good enough for previewing or watching on small screens.
Do I need to download files first?
No. Streaming works directly from your Seedr storage. Files never touch your local disk unless you explicitly download them.
Why does video take a moment to start sometimes?
If the file needs transcoding (uncommon codecs), there's a brief processing delay on first play. Common formats like H.264 MP4 start instantly.
Can I stream to my smart TV without Chromecast?
Yes, if your TV has a web browser. Open seedr.cc, log in, and play. Quality depends on your TV's browser capabilities. For best results, use Chromecast or a media server integration.
Does streaming use my Seedr storage quota?
Files count against your storage quota while they exist in your account. Streaming itself doesn't use additional storage — you're not downloading a second copy.
What's the difference between streaming quality and source quality?
Streaming quality is capped by your plan. Source quality is the original file's resolution. If you have a 1080p file on a Master plan (4K capable), you'll see 1080p — we don't artificially upscale.
Can I share a streaming link with someone?
Yes. Generate a shareable link for any video file. Recipients can stream without a Seedr account. You control whether links expire.
Master includes 1TB storage, 25 tasks, WebDAV.
